Architecturally designed to meet the requirements of its residents, this bespoke Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) project delivers two detached dwellings on a single regional NSW site, one set behind the other. Each is built to Robust requirements and designed as a forever home, with durability, safety and long-term performance shaping every decision.
The design was not originally conceived as modular. It was adapted, because the project suited the method. A steel-framed modular build is inherently robust, and the brief was highly specific and needed tight control. The site was also a long way from both the designers and the residents. Building in a controlled factory meant both groups could visit, see the homes take shape and collaborate far more easily than they could have on a remote site.
SDA duplex in regional NSW, designed to meet Robust requirements.
Interior was completed in the factory.
Modularising the design meant rethinking parts of it, and the answer was a hybrid approach. The modules were manufactured off site, while the roof trusses and external brickwork were completed on site. Building the trusses on site allowed for a higher roof pitch, and the brickwork keeps a domestic scale that responds to the character of the neighbourhood.
The result is the precision and certainty of modular construction, with a material outcome appropriate to the local context.
