The owners wanted the speed and control of modular construction, but not the look of it. The new level had to read as part of the original house, inside and out. At the time, modular was still unfamiliar to most homeowners, and the brief was to make the method invisible.

The site is an irregular triangular corner lot on Anzac Parade, one of the busiest corridors in Sydney's east. Space was tight and time on site was limited. Building the upper level in the factory kept most of the work off the street. The modules were then installed in a short window, with minimal disruption to traffic and neighbours.

existing and new

The triangular geometry meant module layout, structure and stair position had to be closely coordinated with the existing ground floor. The junction between old and new was resolved in design and in the factory. Custom joinery carries the stair through to the upper level. The result is a second storey that reads as part of the original home, with nothing to show how it was built.
